BIA Must Now Process Petition for Secretarial Election

The petition for a vote on a proposed constitutional amendment to lower the blood quantum from one-half (1/2) to one-quarter (1/4) was submitted to Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) on November 16, 2015.

The group that submitted the petition are calling themselves the Isleta Pueblo Tribal Member Coalition. Joanne Rael, Freida C. Apodaca and Helen Padilla submitted the petition on behalf of the Coalition. Padilla is the attorney advising the Coalition. Joanne Rael is the Spokesperson for the Coalition.

Tribal members will now have 30 days to inspect the petition and file challenges to the signatures appearing on the petition. See, 25 CFR §81.61. Challenges must be in writing and submitted within 30 days of the filing date of the petition.
